Zach Mercer to play for Barbarians following England exile

Exiled Gloucester Number eight Zach Mercer will wear the famous black and white hoops of the Barbarians this summer as they take on Fiji.

Mercer’s omission from the England squad since his return to the Premiership has dominated the headlines, however this is the perfect chance for him to prove a point at Twickenham.

The former Bath and Montpellier man joins Ben Youngs in being named in the squad to face the Pacific Island nation in June, in an international double header.

The back-rower has previously represented the historic rugby club in 2022, where he was awarded Man of the Match in their 35-31 win over the All Blacks XV.

Speaking on the call-up, Mercer said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be involved with the Barbarians again this summer,” he said. “I loved the
opportunity to represent the BaaBaas in November 2022 against the All Blacks XV; it was incredibly special to pull on that jersey for the first time and we were on the right end of the result as well.

He added: “Moments and memories like that are the reason you play rugby, so it’s really exciting for me to play again this summer in what should be a brilliant match against Fiji.
