Team GB Men’s Sevens miss out on qualification for Olympic games

The Men’s GB Sevens team have missed out on qualification to this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, following a 14-5 defeat to South Africa in the Olympic Sevens repechage tournament in Monaco.

The failure to qualify is the latest blow to the men’s seven-a-side format in the UK, despite the England, Scotland and Wales teams merging to align towards the Olympics.

The Olympic repechage tournament this weekend was the final chance for the men’s team to qualify for the games in Paris. They began the tournament with three wins over China, Uganda and Canada in the pool stages.

After reaching the knockouts, they beat Tonga 33-0 in the quarter-finals, and went onto beat Spain 17-12 in the semi-finals; however fell agonisingly short against South Africa in the final.

The men’s side won Olympic silver at the 2016 games in Rio and finished fourth at the previous games in Tokyo too.

Whilst the men were unable to qualify, the women’s team will be at the games.

Red Roses Ellie Kildunne and Meg Jones are the headline names for the women’s squad, and Welsh ace Jasmine Joyce will become the first British rugby player to reach three Olympic Games.
