Stats cave: Top 10 tacklers in the Gallagher Premiership

The focus of many fans might have been on the dazzling attacking play this season, but players right across the Gallagher Premiership stood up in defence too. 

The defensive workhorses often go amiss, however they are just as crucial to their teams.

But which players fronted up the most this season? With that in mind here is a full breakdown of the top 10 tacklers in the Gallagher Premiership this season.

10. Lewis Ludlow-173 and Fin Smith-173

In joint 10th, we have Gloucester flanker Lewis Ludlow and Northampton Saints fly-half Fin Smith. The pair made a very solid 173 tackles across the season, with Gloucester skipper Ludlow averaging 10.8 tackles per game in his 16 Premiership appearances. The Saints back isn’t far off that average either, with an average of 10.1 tackles per game in his 17 Premiership games.

8. Ben Curry-183

The first of three Sale Sharks players on this list! England international Ben Curry has really proved himself to be a defensive enforcer this season, making 183 tackles in just 14 games, an average of 13.1 per game.

7. Fitz Harding-184

Just edging out Curry on this list in Bristol Bears captain Fitz Harding. The Bears back-rower has made 184 tackles in 15 Premiership appearances this season, averaging 12.3 tackles per game.

6. Juan Martin Gonzalez-185

Since arriving at the StoneX, Juan Martin Gonzalez has been a revelation. The Argentine international has been the complete package at blindside, making 185 tackles in 14 Premiership games; an average of 13.2 per game.

5. Sam Dugdale-195

Deputising for the injured Tom Curry would always be a hard task, but Sam Dugdale certainly lived up to the billing. The powerhouse back-rower was a brick wall in defence all season, but he really came into his own in the final few games. He made 195 tackles in his 17 Premiership games, an average of 11.5 a game.

4. Alex Coles-201

Northampton Saints lock Alex Coles has really improved his physicality this season, and become his sides chief enforcer in the tight. Coles made a staggering 201 tackles in his 18 Premiership games, an average of 11.2 per game.

3. Guy Pepper-209

Newcastle Falcons back-rower Guy Pepper really made himself known this season. Still only 21-years-old, the flanker stood out with impressive performances for a faltering Falcons team. He notched a whopping 209 tackles in 14 Premiership matches, an average of 14.9 a game.

2. Ernst van Rhyn-219

The third and final Sale Shark on the list is powerhouse South African Ernst van Rhyn. The imposing forward was Sale’s chief enforcer in defence this season, racking up an astonishing 219 tackles in 16 games, averaging 13.7 tackles a game.

How Will Evans is not in the England squad right now is baffling. Quins might be known for their free-flowing attack, but Evans’ defensive work gives them the platform to build from. The flanker made an astounding 235 tackles in 18 Premiership games this season, an average of 13.1 per game.
