Leicester Tigers: Scrum coach Dan Palmer follows Dan McKellar out of Welford Road

Leicester Tigers scrum coach Dan Palmer becomes the second member of the coaching staff to leave the club in a week, following the departure of Dan McKellar on Saturday.

Palmer submitted a formal resignation to the club, stating he was ‘unable to commit to the role fully moving forward into the new season’. He joined McKellar’s staff last season following the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup.

Whilst the club begin their search for a new scrum coach, senior academy forwards coach Neil Fowkes will take charge. Fowkes joined Tigers ahead of last season after stints with Championship clubs Ealing Trailfinders and Nottingham, and also spent two years as Scrum Coach with Wasps.

The rest of the club’s coaching staff have already begun preparations for the new season; but they are yet to appoint a replacement for the outgoing McKellar.

Despite the lack of an official appointment, it is heavily rumoured former Leinster, Stade Francais and Australia boss Michael Cheika will take the reigns moving forward.

Leicester Tigers have parted ways with head coach Dan McKellar after just one season at Welford Road.

The Australian joined the club following Richard Wigglesworth’s departure to join Steve Borthwick’s England staff, however it was a tough season in the East Midlands.

Leicester limped to an eight-placed finish in the Premiership, and won just one of their final four games in the league. A huge problem for the Tigers was their attack too, only scoring 55 tries in 18 league games (3.1 tries a game) compared to Northampton Saints’ 80 tries.

Just 10 days ago, the club confirmed their coaching staff for the 2024/2025 season with McKellar still at the helm, but the club now begin their search for a new coach.

According to reports in the Telegraph, it is believed McKellar lost the confidence of the senior players within the squad.
