EPCR Finals record bumper attendance figures

The EPCR and Investec Champions Cup finals have recorded collective attendances of 96,292, in a huge boost for the European competitions.

The Challenge Cup final between Gloucester and the Sharks saw 34,761 fans pack out the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, breaking the record for a Challenge Cup crowd in the UK.

Following on from this, the Investec Champions Cup final between Toulouse and Leinster drew in 61,531 fans too; the highest capacity the stadium has had for a non-football event. This also beat the 61,011 fans that attended the last NFL game at the ground in 2023.

In some more good news, the Champions Cup final also saw 4.1 million French viewers tune in for extra-time alone according to Rugby Inside Line.

The full TV viewings are yet to be confirmed, however these figures suggest it could be higher than the 20 million from last year’s final.

These figures also represent the growing popularity of the flagship domestic competition. The semi-finals also drew in sell-out crowds at Croke Park and Le Stadium, with a collective 115,000 fans watching Leinster and Toulouse reach the final.

These huge attendances and TV viewings also come off the back of growing numbers across the game. England’s Red Roses also drew in record TV viewings on their parade to a third-successive Grand Slam, with three of the games seeing over 1 million fans watching. The Grand Slam decider against France also recorded a peak audience of 1.9 million viewers.

John Mitchell’s side also brought a collective 70,000 fans into both Twickenham and Ashton Gate in their two home fixtures.

The Premiership has also seen some fantastic viewing figures and attendances too. The Premiership fixtures over the Christmas period saw 212,571 fans attend live games, including sell-outs at Exeter Chiefs, Bath Rugby, Saracens, Northampton Saints and Leicester Tigers.

TV viewings have also been incredibly positive for the Premiership this season. Over 1.8 million tuned in across rounds 10 and 11, and the recent clash between Saracens and Harlequins also saw a TV audience of 1 million. The same game also saw over 61,000 pack out the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Attendances across the Premiership have also increased this season. Harlequins have packed Twickenham out twice this season, with a collective 135,313 attending both Big Game 15 and the Big Summer Kick-Off. Elsewhere, Bristol Bears have also posted their highest attendances post covid and Newcastle Falcons have also seen their attendances grow.
