The impact of the New Zealand bench took it’s toll as England slipped to an agonising 24-17 defeat to the All Blacks at Eden Park.
Two tries from Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Tommy Freeman put Steve Borthwick’s side up at half-time, but 13 second-half points from the hosts steered them to victory.
Here are our England player ratings from the 24-17 defeat.
England player ratings vs All Blacks
Backs
15. Freddie Steward-6
A solid reintroduction to the international arena for Steward. Typically solid under the high ball, and came up with some crucial interventions in defence too.
14. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso-8
Cemented the jersey for the foreseeable future you would imagine. Took his try brilliantly and was once more heavily involved around the park.
13. Henry Slade-6
Another tough performance to describe for Slade. Stepped up very well in defence but never really got going in attack. Kicks to the corner were very accurate though and ate up precious meters.
12. Ollie Lawrence-6
England aren’t really playing into his skillset, if truth be told. Used as a crash ball 12 option, and was dealt with by at least two back-rowers each carry. When deployed slightly wider into the 13 channel he did well.
11. Tommy Freeman-7
Took his try well on the stroke of half-time, and was very strong with ball-in-hand. Just got himself about very well.
10. Marcus Smith-9
Very classy all-round performance from Smith. Produced an exquisite kick for both of his team’s first-half tries and saved a certain try with a clever interception on the goal-line. Kicked his goals too.
9. Alex Mitchell-6
Decent showing from Mitchell. Combined well with Marcus Smith, and importantly gave him consistent quick-ball to attack from. Also kicked well from the base.
Tight five
1. Fin Baxter-6
Couldn’t get his usual grove on in the scrum, but he got through so much work in the loose. Was always the first to put his hand up for a carry and packed a punch in defence. Settled very nicely into life as a test player.
2. Jamie George-5
Couldn’t add his usual platform from either the scrum or the lineout, which allowed New Zealand to dominate the opening exchanges.
3. Will Stuart-5
Tough day at the office. Conceded a few penalties at the scrum and was generally bested by Ethan de Groot for much of his shift. This, in turn, gave New Zealand the upper hand early on.
4. Maro Itoje-8
Really disrupted the New Zealand lineout and breakdown, and just got stuck into every facet of the game. Despite his quality, he gave away some crucial penalties with Damien McKenzie turned into points.
5. George Martin-7
Did everything we’re coming to expect of Martin. His tackling was, once again, superb and he helped England get some decent change in the tight carries too.
Back-row
6. Chandler Cunningham-South-7
Cunningham-South is such a powerful operator, and he put that to good use against New Zealand. Got heavily involved on both sides of the ball, and helped England edge the physicality battle in the tight.
7. Sam Underhill-6
Just did the ugly stuff very well, as always. Got stuck into the breakdown and the tackle. Just a standard Underhill display.
8. Ben Earl-4
Very uncharacteristic performance from Earl, if truth be told. Was often caught out in defence, and missed some tackles which eventually led to chances for New Zealand, and couldn’t bring his typical power into the carry.
Replacements-5
The England bench struggled to make the impact of their New Zealand counter-parts and ultimately failed to get England over the line despite the half-time lead.
